That one bad day when my skillet rusted overnight after I left it in the sink

I washed my 12 inch Lodge after cooking bacon, left it to dry on the rack, and woke up to orange spots everywhere the next morning. Took me 45 minutes with steel wool and three rounds of reseasoning to fix it - has anyone else had a surprise rust attack that fast?

45 minutes of steel wool sounds rough... I switched to a chainmail scrubber after my Lodge did the same thing with bacon grease. It's way faster than steel wool and doesn't strip the seasoning as bad. I just scrub with hot water, dry it on the stove for a minute, then rub a tiny drop of vegetable oil all over with a paper towel before I put it away.

...so you really think 45 minutes of steel wool and three rounds of reseasoning is overkill? I mean yeah chainmail is faster but that thing can leave scratches if you aren't careful and then you're just chasing new rust spots. I'd rather spend the time upfront with steel wool and know I got every last speck of orange off instead of hoping hot water and a drip of oil is gonna save me. Bacon grease is the worst culprit for that sudden rust too, you fry it up and that salt just sits there waiting to eat through the seasoning.
