Scrubbed a rusty skillet with steel wool last week and now my seasoning peels off in flakes
I picked up a $4 rusty skillet at the Tacoma flea market on Saturday and went at it with coarse steel wool for maybe 20 minutes. The rust came off fine, but I scrubbed way too hard and left deep scratches all across the cooking surface. Three rounds of Crisco at 450 degrees later, the new layer is flaking off right where I scuffed it. Turns out you want the fine grade and a light hand, not brute force, or you just ruin the base for the next coat. Has anyone saved a pan after over-scrubbing, or is this one headed for the oven cleaner strip and a full redo?
