My buddy laughed at my 10 year old Lodge pan last cookout
He said I should just buy one of those newfangled enameled ones since mine looks 'beat up'. I told him the seasoning on this thing is older than his marriage and I can slide eggs around it like a hockey puck. Made me think, when did people start treating perfectly good cookware like it's disposable? Anyone else have a friend who doesn't get the whole 'patina of use' thing?

The whole "patina of use" thing is where it's at. That seasoning on your 10 year old Lodge is basically non-stick armor and you don't just throw that away. If your buddy's enameled pan chips, it's totally garbage, but your beat up iron will outlast both of you. Next time he brings it up, just ask him to cook you an egg on his fancy pan and see who's laughing after.

Man it's like everything now is about what looks new instead of what actually works. People throw away stuff with years of life left just because it doesn't have that shiny store shelf look anymore. We're all being trained to value the first day of something over the thousandth day.
