Update: pulled 40 yards of berber out of a flooded basement in Kalamazoo, and the tack strip told me everything

The homeowner wanted me to save it but the strip was so soft I could bend it by hand, so has anyone here ever talked a customer out of a rescue job like that and how did you break it to them?
