That talk with an old timer about stretch ratios changed my mind
I was on a job in Austin last week and this guy who's been installing since the 80s told me I was overstretching my carpet by about 3 inches on a 12 foot wide room. He said I was probably causing seam peaking and premature wear, and that most guys my age learn it from quick YouTube videos instead of trial and error. It hit different because I've had three callbacks in two years for seams showing, and his advice explained exactly why. Has anyone else here been told they pull too tight?

Laid my whole living room way too tight once and my kicker still hasn't forgiven me lol.

Oh man, that's rough! I totally get the "tight living room" mistake. In my experience, cramming everything super close together makes the whole space feel like a maze even if it looks tidy at first. Your poor kicker must have had to do some serious ninja moves just to get around without knocking something over. I've found that leaving a bit of breathing room between furniture actually makes the room feel bigger and way more comfortable to walk through. Chances are your layout looks fine now, but that first tight layout is a hard lesson we all learn eventually.
