Just realized I was stretching carpet wrong for 8 years

I used to just power stretch from the wall and hope for the best, but after a job in Phoenix where the homeowner pointed out a ripple by the door, I switched to doing a knee kicker pass first and then the power stretcher, and I haven't had a callback since has anyone else had that old habit they broke?
