I just saw a crew in Phoenix not using a knee kicker on a 20 foot seam.
They were just stretching by hand. That seam will be a wave in six months. Who taught them that?

Depends on the carpet and pad. Some high-end stuff can be hand-stretched just fine if you know what you're doing.

You're right about the skill part, @barbara_butler, but the room's shape gets overlooked. A simple square is one thing, but a room with lots of angles and cut-outs is nearly impossible to stretch right without a power stretcher. That's where the real difference shows up.
