I had a 12,000 footer back in February and my lower back was sending me messages for two weeks. You need to ice your knees for 20 minutes on and off the first 24 hours, trust me on this. Also grab one of those foam rollers and go to town on your quads and calves, that loosens up the strain pulling on your knees. A good pair of compression sleeves helped me more than I expected too, not expensive ones just basic knee sleeves from the pharmacy. By day three I could walk down stairs like a normal person again. Just give yourself a full rest day after that kind of square footage, no shortcuts.

That thing about the foam roller, did you start slow or just go straight to hurting yourself? First time I tried one I figured more pressure equals more relief and I could barely walk for two days. My wife found me on the kitchen floor trying to work a lacrosse ball into my hip and just handed me the ibuprofen bottle without saying a word. I think there is a learning curve with those things that nobody warns you about. Now I do ten minutes light pressure before bed and it actually helps.
