Had a chat with a customer that made me see my work differently
I was finishing a job in a small house in Bakersfield, and the homeowner, an older lady, asked me if I ever think about the stories a carpet will hold. She said she was replacing hers because her grandkids spilled grape juice on it, and she wanted to keep that memory clean but start a new one. It hit me that we're not just laying down floor coverings, we're setting the stage for a family's next chapter. Anyone else have a customer say something that stuck with you like that?

Last summer in Fresno, a guy told me his new laminate was for his daughter learning to walk. He wanted a smooth surface for her first steps. It made me realize we're not just installing floors, we're putting down the ground for someone's life to happen on. That stuff stays with you, you know? Makes the whole job feel bigger than it is.

That's a really good way to put it. You see it in other trades too, like the carpenter building a kitchen table where a family will eat for years. It's easy to get stuck on the small details of the job and forget the bigger picture. Those small human reasons are what give the work its real weight, long after you've packed up your tools.
