Had a chat with a commercial GC last week who said my carpet seams were too tight

He claimed that overstretching causes the backing to separate after a year, but I've always pulled it drum tight to avoid ripples, anyone else hearing this from builders now?

Pulling it drum tight is fine as long as you're letting the power stretcher do the work not cranking it past the point where the backing starts to stress. The trick is to get it snug but not so tight you hear the backing crackle when you're stretching it in. If you're getting ripples later it's usually from bad installation prep or humidity changes not how tight you pulled it.

Had a friend who does flooring on the side mention this exact thing a few months back... he said some of his customers complained about the carpet feeling loose after a while, and when he pulled it up the backing was all cracked and separated. He figured it was from people cranking the stretcher too hard trying to get it smooth. Makes sense if you think about it, the backing wasn't made to be that tight in the first place... Guess it's a trade-off between ripples now and ripples later.
