Bought a cheap seam iron on Amazon, ruined 3 rolls of carpet
I figured I'd save $50 and get this off brand seam iron from Amazon. First job with it, the heat was all uneven and it melted the backing on a nice plush carpet. Lost about $200 in material for that room alone before I realized what was happening. Anyone else had bad luck with cheap carpet tools from online?

Three rolls of carpet seems like a lot to burn through before you checked the heat setting or tested it on a scrap piece first. I've seen guys mess up a corner or a small strip with a bad iron but never three whole rolls before they caught on. Sounds more like you didn't dial in the temp right or you left it sitting in one spot too long. Even a cheap iron should be able to do a straight seam without destroying the backing if you take it slow.
