The day a 2x4 failed on a deck I built in 2011
Had a call back last spring from a guy in Tacoma, deck I framed back in 2011. He said the railing post wobbled. I figured loose screws, no big deal. Got there and the bottom of the post was rotten, not from water, but from a brace I'd toe-nailed through the end grain. The nail drove a crack up into the post, and over a decade of rain it soaked right in. I spent 4 hours replacing the post and added a metal standoff bracket. Felt like a rookie mistake for a job I'd been proud of. You ever find something you built years ago that failed in a spot you never thought to check? What do you do different now on post bases?
