Salvaging a door frame blunder with some extra trim

Now it's my favorite part of the room.

Nice save. That's the kind of fix you only learn from messing it up yourself first. When a frame is really out of whack, I've had to build it out with strips of scrap wood behind the trim to make everything flush. A little caulk and paint on those seams will make it all disappear.

Yo I feel you on the caulk and paint making stuff disappear, but I gotta say you gotta be careful with that build out method. If you stack too many strips back there it can actually make the trim look weird from certain angles because the shadow lines get all wonky. I learned that the hard way on a window frame once, ended up with this thick blocky look that stuck out like a sore thumb. What works better for me is using a planer or even just a sander to shave down the thicker spots on the frame itself before I even mess with shimming behind the trim.

Yeah the scrap wood trick is a lifesaver when the wall is just totally uneven. How do you keep those strips from shifting around before the trim goes up though, do you tack them in place or just rely on the trim nails to hold everything? I always worry about them slipping while I'm trying to get the trim piece positioned.
