Just squared up my first door frame solo after 4 tries
Kept chasing a 1/4 inch gap at the top jamb because I was leveling off the floor instead of the header. Anybody else learn this the hard way or was it just me?

Floor is never really flat... that's the sneaky part. Took me way too many crooked door frames to realize the header is the only thing you can trust. Always assume the floor has a mind of its own cause it does. Once I started checking the ceiling line too I caught way more problems before they turned into headaches.

Man, that's like the time I tried to hang a picture level and kept adjusting it off the ceiling line until my buddy pointed out the ceiling was crooked. It's crazy how we trust the wrong reference point without even thinking about it. Same thing happens when I'm trying to park straight in a garage and line up with the wall instead of the lines on the floor. Your brain just picks the easiest thing to look at and runs with it. Sounds like you figured out the real trick now though, that header never lies.
