Just had a close call with a load bearing wall in a 1920s house

The homeowner wanted me to open up the kitchen, and I had to pick between trusting the original blueprints I found or paying for a full structural survey. I went with the cheaper plan and started demo, only to find a steel support beam the prints never showed. Has anyone else in old homes found hidden supports that changed the whole job?

But how bad could it really be?

Nearly gave myself a heart attack last year. Found a brick column inside a wall that felt like it was holding up half the neighborhood. My cheap plan almost became a very expensive lesson.
