I was cutting crown molding for 15 years before a guy in Spokane showed me the trick with a scrap block.

I always just held it against the fence and hoped for the best, but he clamped a small block of wood behind the piece to keep it from shifting. The cut was perfect on the first try. How many other little tricks like that are we all missing out on?

That trick with the scrap block is a lifesaver. But calling it a clamp might confuse someone new. You don't actually need a clamp for it. You just cut a block to the right length so it fits tight between the molding and the saw fence. That pressure from the block itself holds everything still. It's more of a snug wedge than a clamped piece.

Oh man, that's brilliant! I've been using a speed square as a backer block for years, same basic idea.
