Had a client in Seattle insist I use only reclaimed barn wood for their kitchen.
They said new lumber 'lacks soul', but the extra time to clean and square each piece added $4k to the quote. Do you think clients understand the real cost of that rustic look?

A buddy of mine built a table from old fence posts for a client who wanted that 'weathered character'. He spent a full week just pulling out rusty nails and grinding off concrete. The client saw the final price and was shocked, saying they thought old wood was cheaper. They just see the look in a magazine, not the insane work to make it safe and level.

They're paying for the story, not just the wood, so that cost makes sense to them.
