Appreciation post: my helper Jesus caught a 3/4 inch gap on a cabinet run in Austin that I totally missed
I was rushing to wrap up a kitchen install on Friday and had already glued and nailed the face frame when Jesus pointed at the corner near the dishwasher and said 'hey boss, that one is open.' I grabbed my 6 inch rule and sure enough, 3/4 of an inch of daylight showing right where the homeowner would stand every morning. We had to cut the nails, pull the frame, and redo that whole section, which ate 2 extra hours, but the look on the client's face when she almost caught it made my stomach drop. Anyone else ever have a helper save your butt on a final walkthrough?
Man, I gotta say I see it the other way on this one. A 3/4 inch gap on a cabinet run is not some tiny thing a helper "caught," that is a gap you should have caught yourself before the glue even came out. You said you were rushing on a Friday, and that is the real problem here, not that Jesus has good eyes. The client almost spotting it is the part that should bug you, because that means it was wide open in plain sight at eye level right where she stands every morning. Jesus did his job by speaking up, but let's not act like he saved you from some hidden gremlin, he saved you from a mistake you made by moving too fast. Slow down on the final fit next time and you won't need a rescue.
