Am I the only one who checks a framing square the day after buying it?
Bought a new 24 inch framing square last Tuesday at the lumber yard in Tulsa and it was out of square by almost 1/16 over the length. I didn't catch it until I was laying out stair stringers and my tread marks kept drifting on me. Drove back and swapped it, and the replacement was dead on, so now I test every square on a known straight edge before I leave the counter. Do you all check yours in the parking lot, or wait until it bites you on a job?
Man, checking it in the parking lot is just a waste of time if you ask me. Those cheap squares from the big box stores are gonna be off no matter how many you dig through, so you are just standing there looking silly testing ten of them against each other. A 1/16 over two feet sounds bad but half the guys I know just tap the thing with a hammer to true it up once they get home anyway. If you are doing rough framing it does not matter, and if you are doing finish work you should be using a better square than whatever the lumber yard is selling.
