TIL networking events are mostly useless for introverts like me

I spent two years going to every mixer in Austin thinking I had to shake hands and hand out cards to get ahead. Then I got a referral from a guy I chatted with on LinkedIn for 10 minutes, no event needed. That $35 cover charge and hour of small talk never paid off once. Has anyone else found a better way to connect that actually works?

I read some study that said 80% of job referrals come from weak ties, not close friends. That made me rethink all those awkward happy hours I forced myself to attend.
