The day my boss told me to stop working at 5 PM

It was back in 2012 at my old job in Chicago, and we were all used to staying late to look good. One Tuesday, my manager, Sarah, came by at 5:05 and told me to pack up and go home. She said the team's work was good and we didn't need to burn out. That simple act made me realize a healthy workplace matters more than face time. Has anyone else had a manager who actually enforced work-life balance?

My last boss in Austin had a hard cutoff at 6 PM. She would literally walk the floor and tell people to log off. It forced everyone to plan their day better and actually get stuff done during core hours. That kind of policy from the top is the only thing that really changes the culture. More managers need to have the guts to do that.

Yeah, and it makes you wonder how much of that late work is just for show. If the work gets done, the time shouldn't matter at all.
