Spent $500 on a 'career coach' who basically just googled stuff for me

I paid this guy for three sessions because his website promised a custom plan. The first meeting, he just asked me what my job goals were and took notes. For the second one, he literally pulled up a generic list of interview questions I could have found myself. The final session was him reading back my own resume to me. I'm out five hundred bucks and have nothing to show for it. Has anyone found a legit way to get actual advice without getting scammed?

My cousin paid a grand for a similar scam, they just gave her a folder of printouts from Indeed. I like what @davis.emma said about coffee chats, but you have to target the right people. I'd look for managers at companies you like on LinkedIn and ask for 15 minutes to ask about their team's work, not a job.

That's a rough lesson to learn. I've had better luck just asking people in my field for coffee.
