Six months of saying yes to every random project at work changed my reputation completely

I used to be the guy who just did his assigned tasks and went home, then I started taking on those weird one-off requests nobody wanted and now people actually come to me with interesting problems. Has anyone else seen a big shift in how coworkers treat you after you started doing the grunt work nobody else would touch?

Is this really that serious though? I mean, saying yes to random projects can backfire if people just see you as the sucker who'll do anything. Six months of grunt work might just get you labeled as the easy mark, not the problem solver. I've seen folks bend over backwards for years and still get passed over for the good stuff. Maybe it worked for you, but I'd be careful claiming it's some magic trick for changing how people see you.

Yeah, you're right that just saying yes to everything isn't a magic switch. The trick is picking the right projects, not just all of them. Otherwise you end up as the person who's always available for the crummy stuff, you know?
