I almost skipped a free resume review at my city library and it landed me a $7/hr raise
I saw a flyer at the Columbus library back in March for free resume help and figured it was some volunteer who'd just run it through a spell check. The guy sat with me for 40 minutes and rewrote my whole summary section, which I'd been copy pasting for 3 years without thinking. Two weeks later I used that version to apply at a logistics company and got called back the same day. They offered me $24 an hour when my old job was paying $17. I keep thinking about how close I came to just walking past that flyer. Has anyone else gotten real help from one of those free community programs, or did I just get lucky with the guy they assigned me?
Would a volunteer really have sat with you for 40 minutes if they didn't know what they were doing? I don't buy the lucky angle. Library programs get paid staff or retired HR people who actually know hiring, not just some random guy running spell check. You didn't get lucky, you just showed up, which is more than most people do with those flyers. The raise came from you being willing to let someone tear apart a resume you'd been clinging to for 3 years.
