Changed my mind about negotiating salary after a friend showed me the numbers
I used to think asking for more money was rude or would make me look greedy. Then my buddy at work showed me his offer letter from another company where he negotiated an extra $5k starting pay. He told me the HR lady actually expected him to counter and said most candidates dont even try. I checked online and found data saying people who negotiate earn like $600k more over their career. That hit me hard because I had left like $3k on the table at my last job. Now I always ask for 10-15% above the first offer and have gotten it twice in the last 2 years. Has anyone else noticed that managers seem to respect you more when you negotiate?

Yeah I had a similar wakeup call a few years back. I was too scared to ask for more at my first real job and later found out the guy who trained me started at 4k higher just because he asked. The thing that clicked for me was realizing it's not personal, it's just business. Once I started treating salary talk like haggling at a flea market where both sides expect a little back and forth, it got way easier and yeah my managers actually seemed more engaged with me after.

@lucas_carr24 nailed it with the flea market comparison. A buddy of mine was too nervous to ask for more at his last job and only found out later the new hire before him got 5k extra just by saying "can you do better?
