Tape fails at hour 6 of an all nighter fort build

Last Saturday I got ambitious. Planned a 3 room fort for my kid's birthday. Was using the cheap dollar store tape, thought it would hold. Nope. The whole ceiling beam came crashing down around 2 AM. Half the corners just let go, boxes slid everywhere. Switched to the wide duct tape with cloth backing. The difference is like night and day. Counted 14 spots I needed to reinforce. Has anyone else had tape fail on them mid build, or is my adhesive luck just cursed?
