My old neighbor Gary warned me about double wall forts, and my son's birthday fort just proved him right
Gary used to build forts with his kids back in the 90s and he told me straight up: never stack two walls of boxes with a gap in the middle, because kids will lean on the inside one and the whole thing folds like a taco. I smiled and nodded and then did it anyway for my son's 7th birthday party last Saturday, thinking a double wall looked tougher. Around 4pm, three kids piled against the inside wall and the gap gave out, the outer wall tipped, and the whole fort collapsed on the snacks. Nobody got hurt, thank god, but there was a whole tray of juice boxes crushed and my son was bawling. We rebuilt it single wall with the boxes taped tight and braced against the couch, and it held the rest of the party fine. Gary came over after and just laughed and said "told ya, kid." So now I'm passing it on: no hollow gaps in the walls. Has anyone else had a fort fold on them like that, and how do you brace the inside so it doesn't?
