My kid's teacher said to let him build forts with the flaps loose, and my whole approach changed
Last month at parent night at Lincoln Elementary here in Spokane, my son's teacher pulled me aside and pointed at the fort corner in her room. She said the boxes she keeps there work better with the flaps left loose instead of taped down flat, because kids can fold them in or out and make rooms and tunnels on their own. I had been taping every flap tight for two months at home, thinking a clean box made a cleaner fort. That night I cut all the tape off our stash in the garage and let him have at it with the flaps free. He built a three room setup with a drawbridge in about 20 minutes, way past anything we made before. Turns out the flaps are the best part, they act like hinges and hinges let you plan. Now I stack the loose flap boxes by size and keep the tape for the seams only. Does anyone else build with flaps up, or do you all cut them off?
