Had to pick between taping boxes shut or leaving them open for the cat

My kid wanted a fort in the living room last weekend. I had a bunch of moving boxes and wasn't sure if I should tape them shut for structure or keep them open so our cat could crawl through. I went with taping about half of them closed and leaving flaps loose on the others. The taped ones made a solid tower that didn't collapse when my kid leaned on it. The open ones let the cat run in and out which entertained everyone for about 20 minutes before she got bored. Has anyone else found a good middle ground for forts that need to hold up to both kids and pets?

Nope. Tape everything shut. Kids fall through the flaps and break stuff. Sorry.

Did you try cutting some windows into the taped boxes? That way the cat can see in and out but the structure stays solid. I did that once and my cat loved having her own little lookout spots. The cardboard flaps are great for hiding but they do wear out fast if you have a cat that likes to scratch. Taping the edges helps stop the corners from getting chewed up too.
