Appreciation post: Finally figured out box scoring after 3 years of building

I used to just fold cardboard boxes however they wanted to bend. My forts always looked lopsided and flimsy. Then last month I watched a video where a guy scored his boxes with a dull knife before folding. I tried it on a big refrigerator box for my kid's castle. Now every corner is crisp and the walls stand straight. It only took me 3 years to learn this simple trick. Has anyone else had that "why didn't I try this sooner" moment with a basic technique?

Is it just me or does it feel like half of adult life is finding out you've been doing simple stuff the hard way? I had a similar moment with sharpening kitchen knives. For years I just used a random sharpener and wondered why my cuts were so rough. Then someone told me to match the angle on the blade's edge and get a real stone. Total game changer. It's like we all assume basic skills are supposed to be complicated but really they're just waiting for that one clear tip or trick to click.

Wait, so you're telling me there's an actual technique that makes boxes less janky and I've been out here looking like I built my kid's fort during an earthquake? @ivan40 you're absolutely right, it's like we all just assume basic stuff is supposed to be a struggle. I spent like two years using a serrated bread knife for everything from opening mail to cutting carpet, just because I thought that's what you did. Maybe we should start a support group for adults who just figured out how to do simple things the hard way.
