Therm-a-Rest before and after, 4 seasons of compressed loft finally hit me
Last spring I upgraded from a 15 year old inflatable pad to a new one for a Tetons trip, and the difference in warmth and comfort was night and day. But my buddy swears his old pad is just as good after 10 years with a foam layer on top. Has anyone else noticed their gear degrade that slowly, or did I just get a dud the first time?
Honestly, your buddy might be onto something with that foam layer trick. Those old inflatables lose their R-value way slower than people think, especially if you top them off with any kind of closed-cell foam. Tbh, sounds like you might've just gotten a leaky or under-insulated pad from the start, not that the tech changed that much.
