Silicone spatula melted into my camp stew, back to wood now
Took my favorite silicone spatula on a 4 day trip to Big Bend last month and left it resting on the pot edge while stirring... it drooped right into the boiling chili, now everything tastes like burnt plastic. I ended up scraping the whole batch and eating cold beans that night. Has anyone found a heat-proof utensil that actually holds up over a fire, or should I just stick with the cheap wooden ones?

Real talk though, the wood ones arent just cheap, theyre also safer for this exact reason. Silicone melts around 400 degrees but a campfire or even a pot right on the coals can easily get way hotter than that on the edges. You probably left it resting right where the metal meets the flame, which is the hottest spot. Even the expensive "heat resistant" silicone spatulas will fail if you leave them sitting there too long, theyre really only meant for stovetop stirring, not direct fire contact. So I would say go back to wood but get a long handled spoon instead of a spatula, it keeps your hand further away and youre less tempted to rest it on the pot lip. Just oil the handle a bit before the trip so it doesnt dry out and split.
