Review from a random hiker changed my tent setup completely

Met a guy on the PCT last summer who told me my rainfly was pitched too tight. Said it would lose waterproofing and trap condensation. I loosened it up that night and woke up dry for the first time in a week. Anyone else run into advice like that out on the trail?

Had a similar thing happen on the JMT a couple years back. Some old timer saw my guylines cranked down and told me I was basically asking for condensation soup. Loosened everything up and woke up with a dry tent instead of that clammy wet feeling inside. It was one of those trail moments where you realize youve been overthinking gear and missing the simple stuff. Glad it worked out for you man, those random tips from strangers are gold.

That "condensation soup" line hit home for me. I remember thinking I had to have my rainfly drum tight like a snare drum to stop water from sneaking in. Turns out that tightness was trapping all my breath moisture inside, making everything damp. Loosening the fly lets air flow through and that condensation actually has a chance to escape. I started using a little shock cord in my guylines so they have some give but still hold shape when the wind picks up. Did you notice any difference in how your tent handled wind after you loosened yours up?
