Rant: I cataloged 47 pieces of camping gear and 12 were basically junk I never use
So I got bored last weekend and decided to lay out every single thing I take camping on the living room floor and actually write it all down. Took me about two hours and a notebook, and when I finished the list came to 47 items total. Here is the part that got me. Twelve of those things I have not touched in two full seasons, including a folding shovel I bought because some video told me I needed one and a lantern that eats batteries faster than my kid eats candy. That is roughly a quarter of my load, dead weight, and I have been hauling it up and down trails near Bend, Oregon the whole time. The scary part is I only noticed because I started weighing the bin, and the whole thing came in at 31 pounds, which is nuts for a two night trip. I always thought of myself as a light packer, and clearly I was lying to myself. Now I am stuck deciding what actually earns a spot back in the bin. What is the one piece of gear you were sure you needed and then never used again?
