My old 90s tent finally gave out after that storm last weekend
I had a Kelty that was from like 1997, that thing survived dozens of trips. But that microburst up near Lake George on Saturday just shredded the rainfly in about 30 seconds. The new ones are lighter but the fabric feels thin, I wonder if they'll hold up for 25 years. Anyone else notice camp gear isn't built as bombproof as it used to be?

Hard disagree. The old stuff was heavy and bulky and the waterproofing would delaminate after a few years even if you babied it. New fabrics are way more breathable and actually seam taped from the factory instead of that garbage sealant you had to reapply every season. I've got a cheap Naturehive that cost me 80 bucks and it's held up through two seasons of abuse including a windstorm that snapped poles on my buddy's 90s Eureka. Survivorship bias is real too, you only remember the ones that lasted because the rest turned into a sticky mess in the garage. Nylon and silpoly are genuinely better materials than what they were using back then, they just feel different.
