My expensive headlamp died mid-hike last night at 9pm
Bought a $70 headlamp 6 months ago. Worked great until it just flickered and shut off. No low battery warning or anything. I had to hike back 2 miles in pitch black using my phone light. Got to camp and found the battery contacts were corroded already. Anyone else had a headlamp fail on them like this? Wondering if I should get a cheaper one next time since this one didn't last.

Your battery contacts corroding after 6 months is pretty fast. I started buying the cheap ones too and just swap out the batteries regularly, works fine for me.

Man, I had almost the exact same thing happen with a $60 Black Diamond headlamp. It was fine for months then just died on a rainy night with zero warning. What finally worked for me was switching to a model that uses standard AA or AAA batteries instead of those built-in rechargeable packs. I grab a cheap Energizer headlamp from the drugstore now, costs like $15, and it's been going strong for over a year. The trick is I pull the batteries out when I store it so the contacts dont get all crusty. Also, putting a little dab of dielectric grease on the contacts before I put new batteries in has stopped the corrosion completely. Might be worth trying before you shell out for another expensive one.
