My 8 year old tent pole snapped in the Goat Rocks and I patched it with a fish hook
I was 11 miles into a 3 day trip in the Goat Rocks Wilderness last weekend when the bottom section of my tent pole just gave out while I was setting up camp in the rain. No splint kit, no spare pole, and night coming on fast. I dug a big fish hook out of my tackle box, straightened it with a rock, and shoved it down the hollow pole to join the two broken ends, then wrapped the whole mess tight with duct tape from my repair kit. It held through two windy nights and I honestly felt like a genius standing there in the drizzle. Anyone else got a field repair story that worked way better than it should have?
Back in 2019 on the Timberline Trail my buddy Dave's backpack strap ripped right off at the seam near Ramona Falls. He pulled out a boot lace and a golf tee he had in his pocket for some reason and lashed the strap back to the frame with about fifteen wraps. That thing carried 35 pounds for the next 40 miles without a single slip. To this day he swears the golf tee was the key part. It is funny how the dumbest fix in the world can outlast the fancy gear we paid for. Your fish hook trick sounds way smarter than anything I would have come up with in the rain.
