Looking at the tag on my old tent and the weight is way off

I was packing for a trip and decided to weigh my trusty two-person tent on my kitchen scale. The tag says 4.2 pounds, but it actually came in at 5.1 pounds with the stuff sack and stakes. That's almost a full pound heavier than advertised. I bought it about three years ago from a big box store. Has anyone else checked the real weight of their gear and been surprised?

Is it even a real camping trip if your gear doesn't lie to you a little? That tag probably weighed the tent on some magic scale on Mars with zero gravity. My old sleeping bag did the same thing, the number on the tag was basically a suggestion, like the "serving size" on a bag of chips. It's like they weigh each piece alone in a lab and then just hope you never add it all up yourself. At this point I just assume the real weight is whatever I feel carrying it after three miles.

Oh man, that's everywhere now. The weight on my coffee bag is never right either. It feels like the listed number is just a hopeful guess for anything you buy.
