Guy at the trailhead near Bend pointed at my bear bag rope and said the 30 foot throw is why I keep losing food
So I'm standing there at the trailhead off Cascade Lakes Highway last weekend, feeling pretty good about my hang, and this older fella walks up and just says it. Thirty feet from the trunk and about six feet off the ground, he says the coons and the smarter birds can reach a low limb or just wait me out.
I've been doing it this way for maybe four years. I thought I was fine because nothing got into it on three or four trips. He told me to find a branch at least 15 feet up and 6 feet out from the trunk, and to hang 200 feet from where I cook and sleep. I moved my spot that night and slept weird because the bag was farther away than I'm used to.
Nothing got into it, but nothing got into it the other times either. Now I can't tell if I fixed a real problem or just rearranged my camp. How do you all pick a hang spot when the trees are all short and scrubby like they are out east of town?
