Debate: Lightweight tarp vs heavy tent for solo backpacking? I went back and forth for weeks.
So I spent like 3 weeks trying to decide between a 1 lb tarp setup and a 4 lb 2-person tent for a 5 day trip in the White Mountains. Ended up going with the tarp because I thought I'd save weight and be all cool. First night was fine, second night a storm rolled in at 2am and I spent 3 hours holding the tarp edges down so I didn't get soaked. My buddy with his old 5 lb tent slept through the whole thing. Now I'm wondering if the weight savings is even worth it when you factor in setup time and risk of bad weather. What do you guys prioritize - comfort or pack weight? Has anyone else made the switch and regretted it or loved it?

Used to preach tarps but a wet 2am changed my mind completely.

Honestly I gotta disagree on this one. I've done three seasons in the Sierras with a 0.75 oz silpoly tarp and a polycro groundsheet, about 8 ounces total, and I've never had a night like that. I think the key is picking your campsite right and knowing how to pitch low and tight with storm mode. Ngl your buddy was lucky he had a tent that handled the wind but a 5 lb tent is over a pound heavier than my whole sleep system which adds up fast over 20 miles a day. I've been in sideways rain at 10k feet and stayed bone dry because I set up in a sheltered spot with a taught ridgeline and the tarp close to the ground. Tbh the weight savings is worth the extra 5 minutes of setup for me every time.
