A guy at the REI parking lot in Boise showed me how to test a sleeping pad before buying
I was standing outside the store in Boise two Saturdays ago, holding a $180 pad box and trying to talk myself into it. This older guy loading his truck saw me squishing the box and asked if I'd actually laid on one yet. He told me to unroll it right there on the asphalt, kick off my shoes, and lay still for a full 10 count, because a pad can feel fine for 5 seconds and then turn into a rock. I did it and felt the cold coming up through the middle almost right away. He said his rule is to lay on each one for at least a minute on a hard surface, since tent floors hide a lot. Has anyone else caught a bad pad this way before they dropped the cash?
