A guy at REI told me to skip the $300 sleeping pad and get a foam one instead
He said inflatable pads always fail in the field and I'd regret spending big. Took his advice, bought a $40 foam pad, and after 3 nights in the Rockies I'm waking up sore and cold. Who's right here - the old school foam guys or the inflatable fans?

Stick with the foam pad for reliability, but add a closed cell foam pad underneath to block the cold coming from the ground. The REI guy was right about inflatables leaking, but cheap foam pads need extra insulation in cold weather. Use them together for a budget setup that will last years with no punctures to worry about.
