Watched a hazy lens on a 1960s rangefinder clear up after 3 passes with a q-tip
A customer brought in an old rangefinder last month with glass so cloudy I figured it was etched for good. I pulled the front element and went at the inner surface with a q-tip and a drop of lighter fluid, and the first pass only moved the grime around. After 3 passes with fresh tips and a gentle circular motion, the haze was gone and you could read newsprint through the viewfinder again. I think it was just 40 years of smoke and skin oils sitting on the coating, not fungus like I assumed. Has anyone else had luck with fluid on coated glass, or do you stick to dry cloth only?
