Spare parts bins used to be a whole closet, now they fit in a shoebox
Back in the 90s when I started at a shop in Minneapolis we had a wall of labeled drawers for every tiny screw and spring, took me a week to learn the layout. These days I mostly order exact parts by model number and my bench has one plastic organizer with maybe 40 compartments, everything else is digital. Anyone else miss the hunt of digging through those old bins, or am I just getting sentimental over clutter?

...and honestly I just read this piece in an old trade journal about how parts availability changed everything, how manufacturers started making stuff that was meant to be thrown away instead of fixed. That's the real thing I miss, not the bins themselves. You'd find a random spring and know exactly which model it came from because you'd fixed that same issue ten times before. Now it's just a part number on a screen and the whole interaction feels kinda hollow. Maybe it's just me but I feel like we lost a little bit of the craft when we lost the physical hunt.
