PSA: I put a drop of lighter fluid on a sticky shutter and it fired 200 times in a row
So I had this Yashica Electro 35 on the bench with a shutter that was dragging bad, and the internet told me to flush it with lighter fluid instead of pulling the lens board. I figured sure, 5 dollar camera, why not. I dripped maybe 3 drops in there, worked the lever, and it went from dead slow to snapping clean at every speed. I was patting myself on the back for about 10 minutes until the fluid dried and it stuck worse than before, plus it left a white film on the blades. Lesson: lighter fluid moves old grease around, it does not remove it, so if you go that route you still have to flush it out with naphtha after. Anyone got a cheap way to pull shutter blades on these without a full teardown? I'm at 6 dead cameras now and my wife is starting to ask questions.
Isn't it funny how the quick fix always seems to work right up until it doesn't? Same thing happens with duct tape on a leaky pipe or WD-40 on a squeaky hinge, it buys you a day and then you're back under the sink. Lighter fluid just spreads the gunk around, so you end up redoing the whole job anyway.
