My old rangefinder's focus patch is fading fast.
What's the best way to restore it without special tools?

Nah, I disagree - a fresh battery and a wire from a paperclip can bring that patch back without much risk.

Oh no, I feel your pain. I once tried to fix mine with a toothpick and ended up with a smudge that never came out. Maybe just embrace the blur like I do with my reading glasses!

Notice how often trying to fix a small problem just makes it bigger, like your toothpick smudge, @patricia_harris69. It happens to me all the time with scratches on my phone screen. Sometimes leaving things alone is the real fix.
