Just wasted $80 on that ultrasonic cleaner everyone raves about
I bought the Vevor 2L model after seeing it in five different repair threads. Ran it for 10 minutes with a Pentax K1000 shutter assembly and it did absolutely nothing, just warm water with some bubbles. Had to disassemble everything again and clean it by hand with lighter fluid like I always did. Anyone else find these things are just a gimmick for camera work?

Gotta use a proper cleaning solution, not just water. Plain water does nothing, you need something like Branson or a simple degreaser mixed in.

Well, I read "gotta use a proper cleaning solution" and had to roll my eyes a little. I tried the Branson stuff and honestly it just made the whole thing smell like a chemical factory in my basement for less cleaning power than a $5 bottle of Ronsonol. Lighter fluid cuts through old grease instantly and evaporates without leaving any residue, no warm up time, no noise. I think the ultrasonic hype works great for jewelers or people cleaning dirty coins, but for camera gears with decades of dried oil, it's just not the same.
