Heard a guy in a shop say 'just clean the lens' and it got under my skin
Was at a camera swap meet in Seattle last Saturday and overheard some dude telling a young guy with a broken shutter that he should just clean the lens. Like that fixes everything. I wanted to jump in and say no, that's not how any of this works. I've been repairing rangefinders for 8 years now and it's always the little stuff people overlook. The real issue was probably a dried up shutter ribbon or a misaligned curtain. Took me 45 minutes to explain to the kid later that most problems aren't on the glass. Anyone else get tired of people thinking camera repair is just blowing dust off?

Yeah but a dried up shutter ribbon isn't exactly "little stuff" either, that's still a solid tear down job.

Read something similar on a repair forum last week, people keep mixing up basic cleaning with actual diagnostics.
