DAE still using lighter fluid to clean shutter blades? I switched after what happened to a customer's Canonet
I used to dunk every sticky shutter in lighter fluid, let it dry, and call it a day, probably did it to 40 or 50 cameras over the years. Then last March a guy brought in his grandfather's Canonet QL17 from a flea market in Akron, and the blades gummed up again three weeks after I handed it back, worse than before. Turns out the fluid was flushing old lube right into the leaf spring pockets and leaving a film behind that grabbed dust. Now I pull the lens block, do a dry clean with a soft brush and a squeeze blower, and only touch the blades with a tiny bit of naphtha on a swab if they are really stuck. Takes me an extra 45 minutes per camera but I have not had a single shutter come back since. I still keep a can of lighter fluid on the bench, but it is for unsticking stuck screws now, not shutters. What is everyone else using for leaf shutters these days, and has anyone found a lube that does not creep?
