Cleaned a 50mm with lighter fluid and it came out worse than when I started
So I had this old 50mm f1.8 sitting in my parts bin for maybe 8 months, gritty focus ring, and I figured I'd try naphtha to flush out the old grease instead of doing a full teardown. Bad idea. It dissolved the grease into this milky sludge that seeped into the aperture blades, and now they stick wide open at f1.8. I spent two hours with a lens spanner trying to get the front group out just to reach the mess I made. What I figured out is that solvent doesn't flush grease out, it just moves it somewhere worse, and you still have to pull the helicoid apart either way. So from now on it's q-tips, a little isopropyl, and patience. Has anyone found a solvent that actually carries the old grease out clean instead of turning it into paste?
